Mammal — film discussion
We are delighted to have Dr Noreen Giffney presenting this 2016 Dublin-set film by Irish writer-director Rebecca Daly. Mammal draws us into an intense psychosexual exploration of grief, loss and isolation.
Margaret (Rachel Griffiths) is a solitary divorcee who had left not only her
husband but also their infant son many years earlier. Now her exhusband appears with the news that their son has gone missing. Onto the scene arrives a homeless man of the same age as her missing son. Margaret befriends this delinquent Joe (Barry Keoghan) and a powerful connection grows as boundaries begin to blur and projections swell in a miasma of loss and longing.
Mammal offers us a resonant portrayal of the psychical operations of erotic transference and how eroticisation as a psychological defence is oftentimes bound up with trauma, anxiety and aggression.
You are invited to watch the film in your own time (available on other platforms to rent or buy) and to join us for an online discussion via Zoom Meeting. A link to join the discussion group will be emailed to those wishing to attend this online meeting.
