Quite unlike anything that has come before it, MANDY is unquestionably an utter assault on the senses - a homage to 70s/80s horror movies that is by turns ethereally beautiful, eerily atmospheric, ferociously violent, and fall-off-your-chair terrifying.
Critics are already touting Nicolas Cage’s performance as lumberjack Red, as the best of his career, in this visually uncompromising feature from the patently unhinged director, Panos Cosmatos. Plot is very much secondary here, but involves the kidnapping of Red’s girlfriend by the leader of a twisted cult, and Red’s inevitable, frenzied journey to wreak bloody revenge on all in his way - with a shiny homemade axe. Not for those of a nervous disposition, it’s safe to say. Contains scenes of sustained, Cage-driven, anything-but-mild peril. A trip.
