Adapted from Yoshida Akimi’s best-selling graphic novel Umimachi Diary, Kore-eda’s drama tells the story of three sisters living together in a large house in the city of Kamakura.

Three sisters – Sachi, Yoshino and Chika – have lived together in their late grandmother’s house in the city of Kamakura for the last 15 years since their father abandoned them to elope with another woman. When he dies, they reluctantly travel to his funeral. There, they meet their teenage half-sister Suzu. Instantly bonding with her, they invite her to live with them.

In his sweetest and most optimistic film, Kore-eda depicts an atypical family and the affection that grows between its members.

Part of Of Flesh and Blood: The Cinema of Hirokazu Kore-eda, a season of films and events celebrating the work of the Japanese director.
