QFT Late – Audition

9:00 PM 31st October 2019 Queen's Film Theatre

October’s QFT Late: Cult & Classic is a Hallowe’en special, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of the most notorious Japanese horror films ever made, Audition.

Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) is a grieving widower, raising his son, Shigehiko, alone in Tokyo. When Shigehiko encourages his father to begin dating again, the elder Aoyama hits upon the idea of using his film business connections to audition a series of women for a fake film role, while actually seeking a new wife. After becoming besotted with the enchanting Asami Yamazaki (Eihi Shiina), Shigeharu soon discovers the quiet, young woman isn’t exactly what she claims to be…

Dark, shocking, and twisted, Audition launched director Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer) onto the international scene and stands as one of the earliest and most depraved nightmares of the J-horror genre.

Dir: Takashi Miike, Japan, 1999, 113 mins, 18+
