Showboat on the HMS Caroline

7:00 PM 09th November 2019 HMS Caroline

The daughter of a riverboat captain falls in love with a charming gambler, but their fairytale romance is threatened when his luck turns sour.

This second film version of the Hammerstein musical is considered by many film buffs to be the best of the three. Irene Dunne, falls for riverboat gambler Gaylord Ravenal and, after a flirtation by duet, she takes the stage with him as her leading man, against the wishes of a mother who wants to keep her far away from the “wicked stage” of show business. Great moments such as Paul Robeson doing Old Man River, Morgan singing her unforgettable Bill’.

Originally an Edna Ferber novel, Hammerstein also wrote the screenplay.

Dir: George Sidney, USA, 1951, 108 mins,

Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO.
