Wild Nights With Emily
OUTBURST & QFT50 PRESENT: The notion of acclaimed poet Emily Dickinson as a tortured recluse is well and truly punctured in Madeleine Olnek’s (The Foxy Merkins) delightfully funny film, featuring a wonderful performance by Molly Shannon as the supposedly reserved literary icon.
With the title taken from her raciest poem, Wild Nights With Emily sheds new light on the life of the famously reclusive poet, revealing her hidden romance with her brother’s wife, and the irreverent side of Dickinson that the world at large never saw. Exploring the fierce rivalry between her brother’s wife and his mistress—who published Dickinson’s poems after her death—the film is also about the struggle to bring to life the work of one of history’s most gifted poets.
Amy Seimetz, Susan Ziegler and Brett Gelman co-star in this wonderfully wry period film from writer/director Olnek, who restores Dickinson’s true nature as an LGBTQ hero and model for new wave feminism.
“Wild Nights With Emily may be Olnek's most political film to date, one that could forever change the narrative of the world's most famous woman poet.” – Jude Dry, Indiewire
