Podcast #11 – In conversation with Shane Smith
As part of Docs Ireland we were delighted to host a public Q&A with Shane Smith, Director of Programming at Hot Docs, North America’s largest Festival and Market for documentary film.
The event took place at the Ulster Museum, in front of an audience of doc lovers, doc screeners and doc makers, and touches on the dark arts of making a huge documentary festival come alive, how Shane got started in the industry and how Hot Docs are taking the gospel of documentary beyond the borders of North America.
Shane Smith previously worked at the Toronto International Film Festival as Director of Special Projects, and Director of Public Programs.
Prior to TIFF he was Executive Producer, In-Flight Entertainment, Spafax, overseeing all entertainment on Air Canada; Director of Programming at Channel Zero Inc; Director CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival; Short Film Programmer for Sundance Film Festival, and Programming Director for Inside Out LGBT Film Festival.
Smith has served on juries or participated on panels at festivals and events around the world including Sundance, Cannes, TIFF, Sheffield Doc Fest, DocNYC, IDA, DMZ Docs, IDFA, Tokyo Docs, Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, Guadalajara International Film Festival, and Bangkok International Film Festival.
